While cats are surpassing dogs in pet ownership in the United States, dogs remain a very beloved and loyal companion. Some nurses believe they can’t have a dog with their 10-12 hour shifts, as dogs require more attention and exercise than cats. Despite the added responsibilities and extra playtime, many people still want a dog in their lives. Especially if they are living on their own.
For an individual with a busy schedule, they should look for a dog breed that requires minimal grooming and exercise, and has moderate energy levels. Because even one walk a day with a dog is good for nurses’ health as well as their pet’s health. Here are the dog breeds that are most likely to blend with your busy lifestyle. But of course, every animal has its own unique personality.
Traits to Consider:
French Bulldogs are known to be great lap dogs and have adorable faces to come home to. With their cheerful and friendly nature, they would rather cuddle on your lap than run around the apartment or house. While they do require some degree of exercise, it is not as much as a boxer per se. Since French Bulldogs are so small in stature, they do not need much room. And are very low maintenance with their short hair.
Characteristics:
Weight: 19-28 pounds
Appearance: Large head with small snout, sturdy body.
Similarly to French Bulldogs, Pugs love to sit on their owner’s lap. They bond very intensely with their owner and tend to be a “people pleaser”. Pugs just want to be loved and adored by their owner, and will clumsily play around to be noticed by them. These dogs need very little exercise and are mostly content by cuddling on the couch. Make sure to not leave them alone for too long though.

Appearance: Wrinkled forehead and flat face, square body and curly tail.
Even though greyhounds have a stealth and active looking appearing, they love sleeping more than anything. Some are unfortunately made into racing dogs and when retired can’t return to normalcy. This breed of dog tends to be very quiet and calm, needing about one walk a day to stretch its legs. These pets are known for being extremely loyal to their owners and remember acts of kindness. They are great family dogs as well.

Chihuahua’s are an even tinier lap dog. These dogs are very loyal and become very attached to their owner. They do not need much exercise due to their small frame. Chihuahua’s need minimal grooming unless you have a long-haired breed. This type of dog enjoys being babied by their owner and carried around. Although they can bark loud when they need more attention.

Appearance: Roundheads, short or long coat.
If you want a larger dog that isn’t too energetic, a Mastiff is perfect for you. For their giant size, Mastiff’s don’t move around too much and prefer to stay on the couch. After getting home from work and watching TV, this type of dog would lie next to you. These dogs tend to be on the lazier side but do perk up around loved ones. The Mastiff tends to be healthy but has a shorter lifespan because of their size.

Appearance: Drooping jowls, short and sleek coat.
Certain breeds of dogs have an easier time than others when their owners are away. Although spending quality time with your pet when you are home is just as important. Whether you take your dog for an early morning walk or watch a show together on the couch at night, having a dog will make your life happier. Having a busy pet owner is also better than not having one at all.
