Heart disease risk factors can be reversed with better lifestyle changes. Celebrate American Heart Month by making positive health decisions that you normally wouldn’t. This doesn’t mean that February is for crash dieting and one month of exercise. The point is to make certain healthier behavior more accessible; to take us out of the ‘I don’t have time for that’ mindset and make it more attainable. The Stages of Change model is built on the very assumption that humans do not change behavior instantly. According to the theory, the five stages of change are: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Using exercise as an example, these are what the five stages look like:
Precontemplation: “I live a sedentary lifestyle and I am fine with that. It’s just my style of living”.
Contemplation: “I’ve thought about working out more, I just don’t have any time to do it right now”.

Celebrating American Heart Month allows us to progress to the next stage of change. The majority of Americans are likely in the contemplation or preparation phase for harmful behaviors that create risk factors that contribute to heart disease. These behavioral changes could be very simple or very challenging; it could be giving up red meat, starting a diet, walking with the dog more, quitting cigarettes, doing a set of pushups before bed, or just about anything else to do with diet, nutrition, and exercise. So you’ve thought about walking with the dog around the block more for more exercise. You’ve been in the contemplation phase because you’re busy with work and family responsibilities. American Heart Month is the excuse you need to move forward to preparation. Celebrate and plan when you can make time to walk, and follow through! Once we begin reaching the later stages of change, and see that this style of behavior is feasible, it is likelier that we will continue doing it. If Americans celebrate Heart Month sincerely and advance even one degree along the Stages of Change model, then it is worth it.
