ViewsAs hospitals continue to lose revenue, millions of health care workers have lost their jobs. On top of economic and emotional hardship, the loss of jobs in the health care field is very concerning. Parents are afraid to bring their children to the pediatrician, cancer patients are afraid to have chemotherapy treatments, and adults are putting off elective surgeries. The fear instilled in many Americans is causing a surge in layoffs and furloughs in nursing. Without elective surgeries or surgeries in general, the skills and abilities of nurses are scarcely needed outside of COVID-19 assistance.
An unexpected consequence of the pandemic is many health care workers being out of work. Before the coronavirus, the health care field was viewed as having high job security due to health care always being in demand. There were always job openings in health care careers, from nursing to physician assistant to physician. In addition to medical billing and medical assistants, allowing job opportunities for people with a variety of skills and degrees. Medical programs have been one of the most sought out programs in the last decade for its job security, the move to technology in recent years has negatively affected other career paths such as manufacturing.
According to the Labor Department, health care spending fell about 18% in the first three months of 2020. Approximately, 1.4 million health care workers lost their jobs in April when the pandemic really took hold in the United States. By May 2020, about 1.5 million total jobs were lost in health care. In March 2020, only 42,000 health care workers lost their jobs. This shows how insidious the impact of the coronavirus has been on our society. The 1.5 million only stands for the number of health care workers out of work, not accounting for the tens of millions of others out of work from hospitality, retail, or administrative work.
It has been reported that hospitals and medical offices have lost billions in revenue by canceling elective surgeries and non-emergent visits in response to COVID-19. Elective surgeries are one of the top ways that doctor’s offices and hospitals create revenue as elective procedures are seldom covered by insurance. Therefore, any nurse who assists in these types of procedures is likely to have been furloughed or laid off. And with the recent resurgence in coronavirus cases, the likelihood of patients wanting to delay their elective surgery is high.
Additionally, patients are scheduling fewer appointments and attempting to avoid the hospital at all costs. Even those suffering from medical emergencies such as a broken ankle or chest pain are choosing to stay home. Resulting in many non-COVID-19 deaths at home that are not even counted. This also causes layoffs in ER nurses that are not seeing any patients in automobile crashes, accidents, and falls, and other emergency care matters.
Health care is a business in America, it is not simply about patient care. Hospital boards and administrators focus on the financial and business side of hospital economics. And with a decrease in revenue, job furloughs and losses are the answer in many cases. There are also hiring freezes in many businesses, leaving most 2020 graduates, jobless. While some elective surgery is coming back again, the number will not resume to normal until likely next year. This creates an unknown puzzle for the future of nursing jobs in 2020.
The health care field has not seen anything like this, the last pandemic was in 1918, over 100 years ago. The virus has completely disrupted all aspects of life, especially health care. In previous times of economic hardship, the hospitals are typically resilient and unaffected by the crisis. However, this pandemic has led to losses of employment and financial ruin in all sectors of society. The longer there is unemployment, the harder it is to get those jobs back.
In the past, people have readily flocked to the hospital at the first sign of a heart attack or stroke, and now people are second-guessing going to the hospital. Something that has never happened before. Parents are putting off getting their children vaccinated at the pediatrician for fear of contracting the virus, therefore, vaccinations for children are down. This pandemic is affecting everyone from young to old. This is surely something we will never see again in this lifetime.
As hospitals continue to lose revenue, millions of health care workers have lost their jobs. On top of economic and emotional hardship, the loss of jobs in the health care field is very concerning.

My name is Hailey Garcia and I am from New Jersey. My herpes virus turned to war after 2 years of living with it. I have tried different medical procedures to cure my herpes but to no avail. Most people think herpes is only a minor skin irritation of which herpes has long term effects on health and passes through the bloodstream and can be easily contracted through sexual intercourse. I knew I had herpes from the first day I started feeling itchy in my pubic area and the pain was very unbearable. I couldn’t stand it anymore. After 2 years of trying other means to get rid of it, I had to contact Doctor Odunga to help me with a permanent cure. I saw his email and whats-app number from a testimony I read online from a lady who was also helped by him in curing infertility problems, I had faith and contacted him. He assured me of his work and I ordered his herbal medicine. Within 5 days, I didn’t feel any pain anymore and within 2 weeks, my skin was all cleared and smooth. I am very grateful to you sir and I write this testimony as others have done to bring those having faith to you sir. If you have herpes or other similar disease and you want it cured, kindly contact Doctor Odunga, Whats-App (wa.me/+2348167159012) OR Email odungaspelltemple@gmail.com
