Since the world is ‘shrinking’ on many fronts, it is a definite advantage for nurses to exchange information and ideas with professionals from around the globe.” Since we are all, in a way, connected through the internet, she says that these programs have the potential to draw students from anywhere around the world.
When it comes to online education, it’s important to consider how it would affect your career, if you have trained onsite or graduated with an online degree. So, there are advantages and drawbacks to both methods. While the quality of the education should be similar on both fronts, some experts insist that online has more space to expand as students can consult with professionals from around the world, instead of being limited to their geographical location. However, others insist on the perks of attending on-site classes as the student can become familiar with the problems that are affecting their career and use their education to create solutions.
Dr. Susan Aldridge, the Senior Vice President of Drexel University Online, recently conducted a study on how potential employers view online degrees. Although there have been no comments that suggest discouragement of online degrees versus on-site degrees, there is a consensus that most employers consider three critical factors when it comes to appraising a potential job candidate. “Academic experts, employers and recruiting professionals agree that to maximize the value of one’s credentials through online learning, the chosen program must meet three criteria,” Aldridge said. “The learning institution must be reputably accredited, have a traditional campus and encompass a good academic brand.”
Regardless, when it comes to weighing the pros and cons of online courses, there is much to be said.

Flexibility
First and foremost, the flexibility of studying an online course is unparalleled. Students can log in from virtually anywhere, browse for their lessons, and attend their classes. Some lessons are even pre-recorded so that those that couldn’t participate in the live lesson can do so at another time. This is perfect for those that already have a job and can’t break away from their responsibilities to attend live lessons. “I could do the work at night, on my off days and even during my lunch hour if needed,” Anita Pool, who has a Master’s degree in Nursing, said. “I found the self-scheduling very compatible with my style of learning. Some of these courses are in the process of becoming accredited or are not accredited at all. When they’re not accredited, they are not reputable and will hold no validity to potential employers. Some courses have only obtained regional accreditation, which renders them invalid to everyone outside the city or state. So, if you want to study nursing through an online, and want your degree to maintain its validity, it must come from an accredited and reputable source.
Workload
Many students underestimate the difficulty of an online course with the pretense that “since I can study from home, it will be much easier.” However, this is far from the case as some students struggle to juggle their daily lives with their studies, which can lead to procrastination and other disruptive behaviors. It is essential to consider the impact that a career (online or otherwise) will have on your daily life if you plan on pursuing a course online.
