Anyone who works in the trauma room in any large city can witness the scenario of a double standard for male nurses. Some of you might have noticed a different scenario, but most of the time there will be a double standard. Let’s think about the differences between a male and female as a nurse in the emergency room. You can say that the gender is the only difference. But, actually, it’s not so. Let’s take a look at both the positive and negative sides of male being a nurse in the emergency room.
Positive Sides of being a male nurse in ER:
So, imagine there is a male RN in the emergency room. He tends to be strict and little more serious than the rest of the female nurses there. What would people think of him? Well, let’s take he is very clean and is more careful about infection control issues than the female nurses. Also, he is the best under pressure and is also the strongest physically. He is also good at picking up the subtle changes in patients’ conditions. I am sure that he will be highly respected by most people in the workplace. Some people would even look at him as a doctor. So, we can say that if you are really sincere and dedicated to your work, you will be regarded as the best nurse in the hospital and people would trust you with their lives.
However, we can’t say that the female nurses are not as good. Many of them are found to have the same qualities as that of the male nurses, but not the same physical strength as the male nurses have. This might be the reason why the male nurses are receiving more appreciation than the female nurses.
Another big difference between a male and a female nurse is that men are usually programmed to not take anything personally, whereas women seem to take things more personally. We might even say this is the most positive thing about men. Also, men are found to be good at working with teams. We might see women go home crying once in a while because work is very upsetting to them, while we don’t usually see males doing so. It may be because they don’t want to admit their profession is stressful.
Negative Sides of being a male nurse in the ER:
While people see several positive things in a male nurse in the emergency room, they also see some negative things too. People often complain that male nurses are messier in emergency healthcare. Also, some people say that they are not as attentive towards the patients as the female nurses are. They even find some male nurses joking around more in stressful situations. Besides all these, some people claim that female nurses are usually more adaptive to multi-tasking when compared to men. Men have been found to be focusing on just one thing at a time while female nurses will be thinking about twenty different things all at the given time. This makes it difficult to work with the male nurses sometimes.
Male Nurses in the ER – Skills and Attitude:
Although there are few downsides with the males in ER as seen by people, their female counterparts say that the male nurses are found to be mastering the technical skills faster than them. They even say that the male nurses are capable of putting an IV in anyone literally, although experienced female nurses are just as capable as males. This might be because the male nurses are often not apprehensive about getting it right at the first time as females are. The male nurses are also found to be good with the psychiatric patients, as well as the hostile drunks. The female nurses say that the biggest difference between the male and female nurses is that the males are not as emotionally sensitive as them and hence, they can always debate about the patient healthcare topic without it being seen as a personal attack. Most of the males in the emergency room are found to be more matter-of-fact and straightforward about the illnesses and injuries. But, this is not the case with all of the women, especially the ones with kids. They are found to display their sympathies more.
Also, according to the female co-workers, the male nurses are very caring, although they might be hilariously crass when they are not near patients. Also, they seemed to be very diligent about keeping rooms, patients, as well as charting very clean. Perhaps, they are found to be cleaner than their female counterparts.

Finally, we can say that there are no huge differences between a male and a female nurse in an emergency room, as they are more or less comparable in technical skills. Irrespective of the gender, the nurses in the emergency room will love a good patient and can work with anyone on their team who is competent and caring. Most of the time, it can be observed that a combo of male and female nurses is what is required in an emergency room!

This might be the most unbelievable, opinionated, generalized piece of writing I have ever come across. This is portrayed as a “Todays Nurse Exclusive” but the only thing that may be exclusive is the authors clearly misogynistic tone. The statements made are based in one male nurses experience and not in any research or fact whatsoever. This piece is not only offensive to every amazing female nurse I have ever stood along side, but to the male nurses as well.
I think this author needs to change his place of work because obviously he is too good for that facility, or so he seems to think.
If you want to publish op-ed pieces, please label them as such and prevent new male nurses from getting a bad opinion of the ER from guys who clearly dont get it.
