What is Prenatal Depression?

The word depression is well-known in society, but we mostly picture an individual who is withdrawn and alone. It is becoming increasingly common in teenagers and young adults. This is why prenatal depression is rarely talked about, and if it is, behind closed doors. Prenatal depression is a new phenomenon that is affecting many women around the world. In society, women are expected to be thrilled about a new pregnancy, and if you aren’t, others are surprised. Especially with all the women out there who struggle to become pregnant for years, or are unable to carry full term.

There’s a social norm to follow when it comes to pregnancy, with the immense excitement and screaming that you see in movies. Along with the “pregnancy glow” that the actresses appear to have. Because of this, feelings of guilt and sadness can occur which is devastating to deal with alone.

When does prenatal depression start?

For women that do experience prenatal depression, it has been said that the period of morning sickness, around week eight, is often when it hits them. To go from feeling healthy and strong to weak and feeble changes your everyday life. This can make women feel uncomfortable or even like a stranger in their own bodies.

If you are working while pregnant, it makes morning sickness or general nausea almost impossible to deal with. This can lead to a buildup in resentment or sadness over the pregnancy itself as it is taking over that person’s life. And this only causes the person to feel shame and guilt. Leading to an unhealthy cycle of low self-esteem.

What are the symptoms?

Someone experiencing prenatal depression becomes more and more withdrawn, which can lead to struggling at work and home. Look out for behaviors like canceling plans, wanting to socialize less, and showing signs of overall depression. This is a difficult topic to bring up to friends and even family. Most people know very little about this type of depression.

Relationship troubles

Women that experience these feelings say they become disconnected with their husband. They also lack the energy they used to have and have intense mood swings. Meaning every aspect of their life is being affected by the pregnancy. But friends and families don’t know that and just continue to congratulate you on the pregnancy and ask questions.

Media representations

Most TV shows and movies give an inaccurate view of pregnancy. They often don’t show the hardships and emotional distress that come along with it. Many women with prenatal depression suffer silently and deal with this on their own. Also, social media shows a very airbrushed view of pregnancy for the most part with perfect looking photos of women holding their bellies.

Speak to your Ob/GYN

A great way to help women going through prenatal depression would be to talk to your ob/gyn about these issues as you are pregnant. Your ob/gyn can give you a depression screening if you tell him/her your symptoms. For someone with a history of other mental health disorders, it is possible to have it happen during your pregnancy. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your friends or even your partner, this is better than having to figure out these feelings yourself.

If you suspect your friend or partner is going through this. You should approach them in a calm and considerate way. Are they excited and cheerful when discussing their pregnancy milestones? Or, do they seem anxious or bothered when any questions are asked? They may need help but are too ashamed or scared to ask.
