I am an Adult Educator, my passion for nursing runs deep. I have continued my education by receiving my RN first, then a BSN, and then my MSN and MPH. I have a long history of working with the community in various areas. I am comfortable in all areas of healthcare and teaching. I have enjoyed expanding my horizons. I have been a nurse for over fifteen years starting out as a teenage volunteer and knowing then that it is my passion and what I was meant to do. I have empathy for my patients because I have been a patient as well. I am engaged in active participation in continuing my journey in everlasting learning, my love affair with helping our population better one’s self will not be stifled as it is an everlasting fire. The next generation of learners needs guidance to better our communities for prevention and maintenance. I have been blessed to have worked amongst people who share my passion.
As an educator, I recognize the importance of all positions in healthcare, that we all need to work together synergistically for the care of patients. The overall goal is that the patient and families or caretakers may be able to manage at home. So, if the housekeeping staff does not clean a room properly for the next client the next client could be subjected to the past client’s germs, just the same importance that if a nurse at discharge does not fully explain how to take their medications at home the patient can be set-up for failure. Failure for our patients is not something I want nor does anyone else, rates of readmission within the 30 days post-hospitalization are high and they are costly. I strive to ensure that the nursing students whom I precept inherit my desire to continue learning and impress their knowledge back upon their patients. Better informed patients are less likely to be non-compliant and have better management of their disease processes. Patients can manage the care of their heart disease, diabetes, and kidney failure well if they are first informed well.
I have found over the course of my nursing career that many patients are ill-informed of what their medications are for, or what a cardiac diet entails. It is our responsibility as the nurse to ensure we are setting our clients up for success. I feel as if this is an important aspect of the nursing world, and I am incredibly passionate for it. It makes it all worthwhile when a patient who has been back and forth in the hospital for readmission for Congestive Heart Failure exacerbation, finally understands the importance of using their scale, or how to read a food label and their readmission rates decline because they are implementing the knowledge you have shared with them. Sharing knowledge seems time-consuming, it does not have to be when one weaves it in throughout a patient visit, it benefits our community, our hospital’s bottom line and it also benefits your own self since you are constantly learning new things and by sharing that knowledge expands your depth of knowledge. My hope is that nurses are educated and well equipped with the knowledge to share with clients. I am blessed to be able to do this as a career in nursing.
