Recently, I returned to nursing school to first, expand my knowledge of nursing. Secondly, in hopes of improving my current skill set as well as polishing up my old ones. To my surprise, I was met with a harsh reality. This was one life’s’ worst experiences. There was a total lack of compassion along with resistance attitudes. Many of my instructors demonstrated cruel intentions toward students. They would often launch vicious threats and attacks of vengeance upon students who dared to oppose them. A member of the staff once told me that this was a business. Not, an institute of higher learning but, a business. Therefore, every nursing institution should hold the student with the highest regard.
It is the student who provides the instructor with a job. Every instructor should demonstrate respect along with a professional attitude Yes, college is an institute of higher learner, but nursing school should differ. Why, because it is an institute which train individuals in the art of nursing. What does this mean? It means the student is taking on a role of caregiver, advocate, mentor and teacher. Many years ago R. N. magazine launch an article title “Why do nurses it their young”. The article elaborated on the harsh mistreatment of the nurse in the making. It went on to reveal just how many older nurses held the upper most resentment for the new nurse. The experience nurses were refusing to take the time out to share their wisdom and knowledge with the young and impressionable nurse. Instead, they would demonstrate anger and bitterness toward the individuals deterring the new nurse from continuing on the pursuit of the path of becoming a nursing.

Recently, I returned to nursing school to first, expand my knowledge of nursing. Secondly, in hopes of improving my current skill set as well as polishing up my old ones. To my surprise, I was met with a harsh reality.
I agree this can Be a reality, as an older student in 2002 to 2004 and again in 2008-2010 doing post grad. I believe this is because these nurses who have this attitude are either burnt out and are either under pressure at work or home, possibly threatened as they want to move up the promotion line and are really not confident. I found that I stepped past their remarks and started to compliment them and try feel good tactics towards them, not all but some responded really well and ended up being really good mentors or colleagues. It’s hard and I spent many post shift in tears! I now feel ok about it all! But have sometime ago come to a place of NO MORE I will not accept bad behaviour and will speak up in whatever way I have to! There is always a better way and no one should be bullied ! And certainly no career should bring you to tears of despair!. So speak up and politely point out they are out of order! Take it further if it doesn’t stop even if it’s a small thing ! As many small chips at you soon build up and you fall down ! Don’t let it happen. Get others to put this in place too so that the bully does not get away with it.
I’m sorry you had such an experience with returning to school. I’d heard the “Nurses eat their young” phrase as well, but was fortunate to have great instructors… including the one former ex-military one, once we had a “meeting of the minds”.
As a former Nursing professor (I’ve since returned to bedside Nursing), I can say I was supportive and helpful with my students. I did notice, however, an increasing tendency of students entering our program with a feeling of entitlement. The came to class late, unprepared, didn’t do or finish assignments and their social lives were more important than studying. It was difficult for me, as their professor, to find ways to encourage them and mentor them in as much as they didn’t take it seriously. These students felt, as long as the tuition was paid, they deserved to pass. It could be frustrating at times to find ways to be supportive.
I hope you are able to find a school which encourages your growth and desire to grow.
I understand where you’re coming from and where you’re heading to. I have been there and had the worse experience than you mentioned. However, I conquered and will continue to excel by the grace of God. I went from LVN to BSN and the nursing school experience was very ugly.
