At the ripe old age of 30, I headed back to the classroom – me who barely squeaked by with a “C” in H.S. But I wanted to be a Nurse, so I headed for the Vocational Education and Extension Board (VEEB) where I would be in a classroom and a hospital setting for a year. Okay I can do this. It was hard, but I was lucky I didn’t have to work so I could just concentrate on school work and the clinical rotations. I was in the class year of ‘90-‘91. I was proud, I was happy. I loved taking care of my one patient. I graduated and sat for my boards which I passed. I was now licensed by the State of New York. I went from SPN to LPN. I had a job at SNCH and reality set in. I didn’t just have one patient I had 10! There was no more taking the time to really be with the Pt. I hated it. This was not what I signed up for. I lasted a year in the hospital setting, and then found a job in a multispecialty facility or as it was known: Doc in the box. I loved it! Here I was able to speak to the Pt find out how they were really doing. I drew blood; I ran the CBC & counted the WBC. Asthma Ptnebulizer treatment; Diabeticfinger stick; sore throat Throat culture; Physicals for school, work, DOT, EKG’s, UAswe did it all! The Mottoif we didn’t know how to do it- we learned it! I became certified in ACLS & BLS. BLS was fairly easy, ACLS not so easy, but I had people to help - we were a team in the same boat.
The company went through many changes, but the staff stayed, doctors changed but the work stayed the same. It was almost 10 years when they closed and off to another office I went tothis time as a practice manager who worked the floor and trained staff. My boss sent me to St Louis where I became a certified Breath Alcohol Tech (CBAT) and instructor. Upon my return I taught my staff, and they were then C-BATs. When the office shut its doors, I moved on. I worked as a gastro nurse, Psych nurse, Pedi nurse/supervisor, Hedis nurse, school nurse, Urgent care nurse. If it was out there I did it and if I didn’t know it I did everything in my power to learn it.
After 20+ years I decided I did not want to do patient care anymore. I wanted to be a forensics investigator nurse. The only thing that stood in my way I am not an RN. I looked into going back to school, until one night I saw an ad on Craig’s list. It was for a medical malpractice insurance company. I would work with attorneys to help decide whether the suit brought against the Dr had any merit and investigate what happened to the patient . This was my dream job. This is what I wanted to do. I know the medical terminology, but I’m not a lawyer, But, I can learn the law in how it applies to my job.
It’s been 4 years since I’ve walked through the doors of where I am presently employed and I am very happy. There are a lot of attorneys, insurance people and RNs, I am proud to say I am the only LPN. The reason they took me was because my background was so diversifiedif I had worked in just a nursing home for the last 20 years I would not gotten the job. But I am valuable, but most of all I feel valued. Just because you may not be an RN doesn’t mean you aren’t valuableif you have the opportunity to learn something – take it, you never know when it might come in handy.
Remember, while you are working make sure your handwriting is legible, your I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed, because if you get sued, that chart will be your best defense (or worst defense if it is not legible or complete) who knows, I might be the investigator/rep assigned to your claim.
