As a nurse of forty-plus years, I cannot help but wonder what the future of nursing holds for my younger colleagues. It is no secret that as a nation we have encountered nursing shortages for years and the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects growth faster than occupation. It goes without saying that nurses will always be in demand and play an increasingly important role as healthcare needs continue to expand. Most definitely COVID-19 has played an important role in that demand.
Healthcare workers have a powerful presence today in healthcare with more than four million registered nurses. Education demands have increased and many have moved into positions as APN’s. As demands increase so will the attention, equipment, and supplies they will need to work effectively and safely.
There’s more than just a place for nurses in the future. A critical shortage (if not already here) is expected within the next few years, and the beginning of COVID-19 has likely shortened that timeline. Nursing leaders must seek to advocate for better safety standards in hospitals and increased support staffing. Sequentially, we can maintain the level of care needed to ensure that everyone has access to the proper care and support.
With technology at an immense shift, an aging patient population, and new federal legislation challenges, the nursing industry is now forced to evolve to ensure that hospitals and other organizations are able to continue to provide the best possible care. This forces healthcare workers on all levels to stay abreast of the developments and keep pace with those changes.
Nursing demographics have in the past been fairly uniform along racial and gender lines. However, the industry’s makeup is changing. “In 1930, only 2 percent of nurses were male, according to the study “Counting Nurses: The Power of Historical Census Data.” As of 2015, the ratio of women to men in nursing was about 9.5 to 1, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.
I believe we will see an increased need for healthcare data collection, increased emphasis on healthcare prevention, and increased growth for educational opportunities. Mega hospitals, managed care, and redefined professional roles will have a significant impact on healthcare professions, including nursing. To remain relevant in a reformed healthcare system, nurses will have to redefine and remake themselves. Below are seven ways to advance nursing careers after becoming licensed.
- Have a short-term and long-term plan.
- Attend conferences, read journals.
- Volunteer for leadership responsibilities.
- Take continuing education courses.
- Seek out webinar education.
- Join professional organizations.
- Pursue additional certifications.
