Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)  can affect people of any age.  It also can occur in many different types of occupations such as ambulance workers and nurses.  Some people have more sensitivity when experiencing traumatic events. This can be one event or several events over a time period.  It was first described by war veterans returning from active combat. It has even been described from women or children experiencing some type of mental, emotional, or physical abuse.

Symptoms of PTSD

The symptoms of PTSD are consistently clustered in two areas.  First is the experience of extreme anxiety when reliving or remembering the traumatic experience. This anxiety often occurs during sleep.  Secondly, this anxiety can occur when triggered in everyday living. The trigger or the dream can plummet the person back into the past traumatic experience and they feel like they are reliving the trauma again and again.

Breaking the Cycle of PTSD use of Affirmation Prior to Sleep

The first concern is addressing the nightmares, as they disrupt sleep and can adversely affect loved ones. The nightmares can be so horrific that the person experiencing them doesn’t want to talk about it. Therapies such as writing down the dream and art therapy have been helpful in describing the nightmare.  

However, my focus is not on reliving the experience, but replacing it or lessening the powerful emotions generated by the past traumatic experience. The first step is to acknowledge this process is happening.  Affirmation therapy is a way to program yourself for a relaxing sleep. To do this, write a list of affirmations to read as the last thing you do before you go to sleep at night. I have found this technique to be very helpful for my patients.

Some examples of affirmations include:

  1. I will have a pleasant dream about _____________.
  2. I will have deep and relaxing sleep.
  3. I will remember my good dreams.
  4. I will ask my angels or guides to protect me when I sleep.
  5. I am able to protect myself. (visualize a white light around your body)

Additionally, to add more positive input into your brain synapses, use a sleep hypnosis recording. Be adventurous and try different ones; there are many on  YouTube.  I have found this strategy to be very helpful. These videos usually contain the affirmations within the session, so you can use this instead of repeating to yourself from your list.  It depends if you are a visual or an auditory learner.

Neurolinguistic Programming or NLP through use of EMDR

It is well known in the medical literature that when a traumatic memory occurs, it creates a unique synaptic pathway. The best way to address this problem is to override the synaptic pathway and replace it with more positive and present time thoughts.  The Veteran’s Administration has placed EMDR as its highest-rated treatment for PTSD. How to do this first is through the study of Neurolinguistic programming.  One way through hypnosis has been tried from regression therapy to frank psychoanalytic therapy.  I think a fresh approach is necessary.

The use of the affirmation list and/or the visualization technique is only partially helpful.  There are triggers from day to day that can cause a cascade of memories to be invoked.  How to handle this when the past is taking your attention over the present?  Look also in my articles on natural treatments for Anxiety.  The PTSD experience is often more severe.  The Department of Defense and the Veterans administration both have given a AAA rating to the use of EMDR. This is a stepwise intervention that is based on using the NLP or the reprogramming of the brain to lessen the severe impact of these memories and place them in a framework that is less painful for the individual.  It does not involve medication and has been found to be very effective.  See this link to explain the procedure EMDR What it is and how it works. The problem with this therapy is that you have to find a practitioner who provides it and it can be too costly to be helpful for you.

Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT therapy for PTSD

Another technique that uses a similar procedure and can be practice by you for you is the EFT.  I suggest this as it is a free technique and you can use it anytime you have experienced a trigger.  EFT can be used in conjunction with EMDR as well. EMDR works to lessen the traumatic synaptic pathway and EFT works in with the acupuncture or the electrical meridian pathways in the body that is triggered when the memory comes up. So both address the memory structure in slightly different ways and are equally effective.  I like EFT over EMDR because it is a technique you can use at any time. Personal Experience of PTSD

I have personally had this disorder and have found the EFT and the affirmation therapy with the sleep inductions from  YouTube to be the most effective for my and I have found these strategies to be effective for my patients.  You can heal from PTSD and lessen its grip on your everyday life.

Most important again is to focus on the here and now and to remind yourself that you are safe in the present.  Having a spiritual outlook will help to remind you that you are never alone and there are higher forces that spared you then and are ever-present now.

    PTSD becomes a growing issues among our immigrants population because of the past experience of civil war, torturers and similar traumas. The sleep and eye movement therapy help some but we need more for those who refuse PTSD medications due to fear of addiction to it.
