Boost Your Coffee with These Vitamins and Antioxidants

For many nurses, coffee can fend off your stress, exhaustion, and fatigue with just a few sips. It can help keep you up during your long night shift, or get you moving in the morning after spending an hour in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Most of us believe that our day doesn’t start until we’ve had our cup o’ joe. But, sometimes, when we are drinking our coffee we forget things that we also need, like vitamins, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Instead of just having your coffee black, you can add these six natural supplements to make your brew a special one.

Some of these additions can boost your mood and protect your heart. Try any of these supplements today to make a vitamin-filled coffee.

1. A dash of cinnamon

Even just a little bit of cinnamon is packed with antioxidants. You can use cinnamon as a spice for your food, and it has been used for medicinal purposes for decades. It has 41 protective compounds and contains one of the highest antioxidant activities. One study done on mice found that cinnamon may help protect both your heart and your brain. Another study done on human cells also suggested that it can lower the risk of cancer and may boost your immune system.

To add cinnamon into your coffee, stir ½ tsp into your cup or brew your coffee with 1 tsp. of cinnamon mixed into the grounds.

2. Add some ginger

Adding some ginger to your cup of coffee to have a slightly spicy, aromatic cup. You might already know this, but ginger has a ton of health benefits. Ginger has been used as a treatment for nausea, and contains a lot of potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. It can even be used to reduce muscle pain, lower your cholesterol, and help in digestion.

The best way to add ginger into your cup is to add it directly (at most 1 tsp with each cup), or you can even stop drinking pumpkin spice lattes from a coffee shop and brew your own, healthy one at home.

3. Mushrooms and coffee?

Yes, you read that one right. Mushrooms and coffee. Adding this tasty fungi to your daily brew might have several, surprising health benefits. Mushrooms contain a ton of antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting components.They also have been deemed anticancer because of the amount of antioxidants they have, and on several studies on mice, mushrooms have been found to prevent liver disease.

Popular brands of coffee, like Four Sigmatic, claims that mushroom coffee is very beneficial for your body, that have superfoods and half the caffeine. Four Sigmatic told Healthline, “You also skip the jitters, stomach issues, and post-caffeine crash that normal coffee gives most [people].”

Some brands have mushroom powders you can pour and stir into your coffee, or buy them in packaged brands from your local grocery stores. There are even mushroom coffee K-Cup pods that are available.

4. One dose of turmeric

Turmeric is considered the “golden spice” for good reason. 6. Don’t forget the cacao

Mmm, coffee and chocolate might seem too good to be true, but when you add raw cacao powder into your coffee, it has a lot of health benefits. Cacao is a superfood that holds a powerful amount of antioxidants, and it’s also high in iron. It’s even good for your heart as well. Because cacao has anti-inflammatory properties, it can lower blood pressure, increase HDL cholesterol, and reduce LDL cholesterol. It also has cognitive, mood-enhancing, and antidepressant benefits.

The best way to serve this is stirring 1 tbsp. of raw cacao into your coffee. This will give it a boost of antioxidants, magnesium, and dietary.
