I wanted to write an article for the Nurse Advisor Magazine and was struggling with the topic since there is so much information overload going on in our world. Then an “ah-ha” moment came. Today is March 19, 2021, Certified Nurse’s Day!! So, my article is dedicated to every nurse out there that has their certification, those that are working on their certification, and those nurses who feel like they want to get their certification but lack the confidence to move forward to pursue the certification. I have my PCCN-K certification, and when I began studying to get my certification, I asked myself questions and figured out the answers that I would love to share.
- Getting your certification is expensive – Check your work to see if they will pay for or reimburse you for certification. In my case, the organization I work for did exactly that, through the hospital foundation. So that when I passed (which I did… shew), they reimbursed me.
- Ok, so now that I have a plan to pay for my testing, how do I get the knowledge to pass the test? – Check with the facility that you work for, check out the ANA and MNA certification groups, and see how they can offer help to you for payment of a class or course. In my case, our foundation paid for the class and in return, I had to teach other staff within our hospital system regarding what I learned. The best part was that I got to use that teaching as a two for one special. I was able to use the teaching towards one of my three teachings on our clinical ladder.
- I lack the confidence to even try – So, truth be told, it took me 3 times to pass my certification, because the first time I missed it by 3 questions, and the second time I missed it by one question. Was it frustrating? YES. Impossible? No. I needed to persevere because I was never good at test-taking, so I used my education skills to work on anxiety, good test-taking tips, etc. What we need for help is out there, we just need to utilize our resources. Also, get a few of your peers that you work with to go in on the certification process with you, and form a study group. One of our directors always tells us – “It takes teamwork to make the dream work” and that is so true.
- Wisdom – Do not cram information at the last minute, get a great night’s sleep, let someone drive you (less stressful), and make sure that whoever drives you stops to buy you a nice breakfast (worked great for me). Before you leave your house get centered – (I prayed, looked myself in the mirror, and said “you got this”).
