Becoming a nurse, I feel, means submitting to a special calling and receiving a special gift for life. There are challenges every day to be sure. However the rewards are great. Besides a means to livelihood, the degree of personal satisfaction is immeasurable.
There are years of preparation for this career. Attending an accredited program is essential to assure standards of education are met both academically and clinically. There are several paths from which to choose–the college or university degree program, hospital diploma program, or vocational program to become a licensed practical nurse. Upon graduation the individual needs to apply to the State Board of Examiners. After a successful review of the applicant’s credentials by The Board, the individual is granted a date for examination. Passing the state boards earns the coveted license. The license opens the door to a healthcare career.
Advances in science and technology have influenced nursing practice greatly through the decades. There are many avenues of practice a nurse can pursue today. No matter whether a charge nurse, nurse manager, or APRN, there are criteria and regulations to uphold in the performance of daily responsibilities. For the Registered Nurse, at the heart of the duties and responsibilities are knowledge, critical thinking, and decision-making capabilities for the benefit of clients. The nurse is a key member of the multidisciplinary team delivering quality care. Preventative, curative, supportive, and restorative nursing interventions are utilized in the care setting.
Visiting the website of The State Department of Public Health of the state employed and licensed will provide the details of the Scope of Practice for the type of license issued. Obtaining employment demonstrates your acceptance and commitment to the regulations outlined.
The State Department of Public Health Committee on Scope of Practice makes determinations for healthcare professionals. Recently the Committee reviewed the role of APRNs, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants. The rising aging population brought recognition to the burden placed on physicians to provide adequate attention to these needs. As a consequence determinations were revised and published. Physicians are gaining support from these highly qualified nurses in healthcare settings as well as the community.
A nursing license is not transferable state to state or territory in the United States.
However several states employ a reciprocity agreement that allows a licensed nurse in one state to obtain a license in the new state by verifying the license is active and there are no complaints against the license from the first state. There are guidelines to follow and fees involved but the application process is quicker. The Dept of Public Health in the new state can assist the applicant in the process.
Protecting your nursing license is essential. Always be attentive at your annual review.
Be sure all comments are accurate. A mediocre evaluation should alert you to seek explanations where your opinion differs from your evaluator. To improve your performance you need to know the facts. Performing at the top range of your clinical skills and decision-making capability should be the goal. Falling short may one day find you are non-compliant to the expected scope of practice. Once a complaint is filed against your license it is suspended pending investigation by the review board. You can not work as a nurse without your license. Depending on the allegation and findings of The Board, fines for the infraction may be the result, or possibly the license being revoked. Either case is not good. The State Dept. of Health publishes a Quarterly Action Report. This lists all disciplinary actions taken against individuals. Employers have access to this report so obtaining a nursing position would be extremely difficult.
Therefore stay on top of the curve. Read periodicals and trade journals. Take CEUs even if you don’t need them. Attend lectures or seminars or take online courses to stay current in techniques and knowledge. Never stop learning.
