According to Seine (2014), “Women’s health encompasses a continuum of biologic, psychologic, and social challenges that differ considerably from those of similarly aged men” (p. 3). Women’s health concerns have drastically evolved over the years and include so much more now than before. Women comprise more than 50% of the U.S. population; however, the research continues to be limited, up until recently. With the healthcare industry continuously changing, so does the impact it has on the current population and the needs that must be accommodated. “The 20th century witnessed major achievements and transitions in public health and clinical medicine” (Seine, 2014, p. 49).
How has the public’s view on women’s health changed? “The lives of American women were significantly influenced by three historical health challenges of the 20th century: epidemic of infectious diseases, tobacco epidemic, and the epidemic of obesity” (Seine, 2014, p. 5-7). Additionally, the overall health literacy and knowledge base regarding women’s healthcare was lacking. Women’s health has generally been associated with reproductive functions, women’s multiple roles throughout the lifespan, and diverse social circumstances; however, expanding the knowledge of what the healthcare field has obtained via research over the years has lengthened the public’s view of women’s health.
The Affordable Care Act had a major impact on healthcare in general, but also brought onward the concerns of women’s healthcare. “Many provisions of the bill have a direct impact on the women’s healthcare services” (Armstrong, 2015, p. 325). Additionally, women have created roles within society that have been awkward at times, but not have been accepted. Women are becoming empowered and involved in day-to-day activities that have created resistance at times. The public views of women’s healthcare have changed largely due to the new roles that are being claimed and the existence of equality and fair treatment for all.
What type of impact has health promotion had on women’s health? Healthcare promotion and education have played a vital role in the healthcare system as a whole; however, women are becoming more focused on themselves and desiring to know more about their health and wellness. “Team-based care in the outpatient women’s health setting has the potential to help alleviate the demand for women’s healthcare providers and to deliver improved quality of care to the growing population of U.S. women.
Although teamwork is necessary in the current healthcare system, most of the current obstetrics and gynecology and advanced practice provider (APP) workforce were not trained for collaborative practice” (Philipp & Stonhocker, 2018). Moreover, “health literacy plays an important role in reproductive knowledge and may impact behaviors and outcomes. While further research is necessary, healthcare providers should utilize health literacy best practices now to promote high-quality care for patients” (Kilfoyle, et al., 2016).
“Greater life expectancy has been achieved through improving the mortality rate of maternal and infant mortality, improving the development of vaccines which has provided protection and prevention of infectious conditions, determining the effects of cigarette smoking and its relation to heart disease, cancer, and respiratory conditions, and behavioral and environmental risk associated with chronic conditions” (Seine, 2014, p 49). The ability to identify current or potential problems and promote healthy lifestyles may indeed lower the mortality rates of women by emphasizing and encouraging avenues of healthy living.
Many women are living longer lives filled with successful outcomes and accomplishments; therefore, our attention should re-focus on aging and chronic conditions for which education can be obtained and provided. Encouraging and empowering each other to learn more and do more may also create the desire to be better, live better, and do good. Creating avenues to success and opening new doors can ultimately result in all persons the advantage of healthcare access with adequate healthcare coverage. Education, communication, and encouraging acts is the key to successful patient outcomes.
